A young cask strength Hampden LROK finished in Oloroso, where the sherry leads with honey, cherry and creamy dried fruit and the estate’s banana and pineapple funk sits in support, fruity and spicy.
Description
Bottled by RomDeluxe for its Wild Series, this is a single cask of LROK, a mid level Hampden marque from the Trelawny estate. It is a 100 percent pot still rum distilled from molasses in 2020, and although Hampden is the reference point for high ester funk, this release tilts away from wild esters toward cask influence.
The Oloroso sherry maturation clearly shapes the character, bringing honey, cherry and creamy dried fruit that wrap around the banana and tropical fruit from the spirit. At cask strength the alcohol is warm and the finish turns peppery and fruity. Bottled unsweetened, it is a softer, sherried side of Hampden where the barrel leads more than the funk, best sipped slowly or pushed into a bold cocktail.
