Description
Hampden in Trelawny is the reference point for high-ester Jamaican funk, but this RomDeluxe Wild Series single cask sits at the calmer end of the house. Distilled in 2012 and aged twelve years in ex-bourbon, the MJH3 marque here keeps esters relatively low, so the rum trades acetone fireworks for fruit and oak.
Bottled at 60% from molasses and the classic double-retort pot still, it shows light, fresh tropical fruit, a floral lift and gentle wood on the nose, then a fruity, faintly vegetal palate with caramel sweetness. The finish turns to roasted oak, dark chocolate and dry spice. With little of the glue-and-solvent intensity Hampden can deliver, it drinks well neat or with a few drops of water, and suits those who want Hampden's pedigree and weight without the full funk assault.
