Description
Celler Masroig is a long-standing growers' cooperative in the town of Masroig in Tarragona, a leading name in D.O. Montsant with around two hundred members and five hundred hectares of vineyards laid out on dry-stone terraces alongside olive trees. Rojalet Negre is its aged red, built from Garnacha and Carignan, the two grapes that define Montsant and the neighbouring Priorat. The region's poor, stony soils and warm, dry climate produce low yields and concentrated, ripe fruit, which here reaches 14.5 percent. Garnacha brings sweet red berries and warmth, while Carignan adds darker fruit, firmness and a peppery edge. The wine spends eight months in French oak barrels, enough to soften the tannins and add a light toast and spice while keeping the fruit in front. Supplied in a three-litre bag in box, it holds well once opened. The colour is deep ruby, the nose offering ripe red fruit, plum, cherry, black pepper, liquorice and a touch of oak. The palate is round and concentrated, warming and smooth, with a savoury, lightly toasty finish. Serve at 17 degrees. It suits grilled and roast meats.
