Rodrigo Méndez, a cult name in Rías Baixas, makes Cíes Tinto from the Atlantic reds Caíño Tinto, Espadeiro and Loureiro. Light at 12% and aged in foudres, it is fresh and saline, with bright red fruit and a peppery, herbal edge.
Description
Rodrigo Méndez is one of the most respected and private names in Galician wine, best known in Rías Baixas, where he champions the area's overlooked native red grapes. Cíes Tinto blends Caíño Tinto, Espadeiro and Loureiro, Atlantic varieties that give pale colour, sharp acidity and low alcohol rather than power. The coastal vineyards sit close to the sea on granitic, sandy soils, in a cool, damp climate that keeps the fruit fresh, red-toned and lifted, with a saline edge that runs through Galician wines grown near the Atlantic. The wine ages 12 months in large foudres; the big format means very little oak character, while slow oxygen exchange softens the firm natural tannins of these grapes and keeps the fruit clean and bright. The colour is pale ruby. The nose shows redcurrant, raspberry and cherry over black pepper, dried herbs and a salty, coastal note. The palate is light and taut, with high acidity, fine tannins and a fresh, saline finish. Serve at 13 to 15 degrees, lightly chilled. It suits poultry, oily fish and lighter savoury dishes.
