Description
Pere Labat is the rum of the Poisson distillery on Marie Galante, a small and well regarded house known for its classic high strength blancs, and this very old agricole was selected as a single cask by the French outfit Rock and Rhum. Distilled from fresh pressed cane juice in the agricole tradition and matured for eight years in ex bourbon, the 2016 vintage carries real maturity from its tropical ageing while staying at a relaxed 45%.
The nose stays vegetal and cane forward with allspice and ripe fruit, then the palate opens onto tropical fruit, a floral lift and a streak of butterscotch. The finish brings passion fruit, milk chocolate and a faint rubbery, estery edge that nods to the island's funkier side. An honest, layered Marie Galante agricole for drinkers who enjoy fresh cane character softened by a few years in oak.
