Roc des Anges works biodynamically at Montner in Roussillon, on white soils ringed by black schist. This Grenache Gris spends a year in French oak and comes through textured and saline, with pear, green apple, quince and a stony, herbal depth.

Description
Marjorie and Stephane Gallet set up Roc des Anges in 2001 at Montner, in the heart of Roussillon in southern France. The estate name means rock of angels and points to the striking terroir, a band of pale soil surrounded by black schist. Grenache Gris is an old pink-skinned mutation of Grenache, long grown in Roussillon and prized for its texture and saline grip rather than for showy aromatics. The schist soils give the wine minerality and structure, while the warm Mediterranean climate is tempered by the Tramontane wind, which keeps the vines healthy and the fruit fresh. The wine ferments and then ages twelve months in French oak barrels, a stage that adds texture and roundness and lets the wine broaden while the skin's phenolics lend a light grip. The colour is deep gold. The nose brings pear, green apple and quince over dried herbs and a saline, stony note, and the palate is broad, textured and dry, saline and long on the finish. Serve at 11 to 13 degrees.
