A five year old molasses-style rhum from Reunion’s Riviere du Mat, aged in ex-bourbon and built almost entirely around deep roasted coffee and espresso, a dark, distinctive sipper at 45% that also takes well to cola.
Description
Riviere du Mat distils on Reunion, where the island's tradition runs largely to molasses rum rather than fresh cane juice. This Traditionnel Vieux is the molasses-based, traditionnel side of the house, a five year old matured in ex-bourbon oak, distinct from the fresh-cane agricole that the AOC term covers.
The defining feature here is roast: the nose, palate and overall character are dominated by coffee and espresso, the kind of deep, bittersweet roasted note that some drinkers chase and others find singular. The ex-bourbon casks add a backbone of oak under that coffee profile. There is no claimed dosage, but the sweet roasted impression sits front and centre. It works neat for anyone who enjoys a coffee-forward rum, and like most coffee rums it is arguably at its best lengthened with cola.
