Description
Riga Black Balsam 1752 Original Recipe Black Currant is a blackcurrant edition of the historic Latvian balsam, developed in Riga in the mid 18th century. The base Riga Black Balsam dates to 1752 and is built on 24 all natural ingredients, an oak aged blend of herbs, roots, berries and buds that gives it a deep, bittersweet herbal character. This variant sets blackcurrant against that base and is bottled at 30%.
The nose is intense, with redcurrants and a note of ginger, while the palate is gentle around redcurrants, berries and buds, closing long on the redcurrant fruit, with mint, anise, wormwood and gentian shaping the herbal frame. For the trade it offers the bittersweet herbal backbone of a Latvian balsam lifted with dark berry fruit, a way to add aromatic depth, colour and a tart sweetness to a long drink. It is enjoyed neat or in refreshing cocktails and makes a fine aperitif. Serve it chilled.
