Domaine Rietsch is a seventh generation, organic and natural producer in Mittelbergheim, Alsace. This juicy litre of Pinot Noir, aged six months in foudres, is light and perfumed, with bright red berries, cherry and a peppery, savoury edge.
Description
The Rietsch family has farmed in Mittelbergheim, a village at the foot of the Vosges in Alsace, for seven generations, and since the early 1970s under their own name. They work organically and as natural producers, fermenting with native yeasts and keeping additions to a minimum. This Tout Rouge is Pinot Noir bottled in a generous litre format for everyday drinking. Alsace sits in the rain shadow of the Vosges, so the climate is dry and relatively sunny, while the limestone and marl soils around Mittelbergheim lend the wine freshness and a savoury, mineral lift. Six months in large foudres gives gentle oxygen exchange and softens the structure without imposing any obvious oak character, keeping the focus on primary fruit. The wine is pale ruby, with a fresh, perfumed nose of redcurrant, wild strawberry, cherry and a hint of rose, framed by black pepper and a leafy, earthy note. The palate is light and energetic, with crisp acidity, very fine tannins and a clean, lightly grippy finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, with a light chill if you like, in a Burgundy style glass. It suits roast chicken, charcuterie and grilled salmon.
