Richard Kershaw, a British Master of Wine, makes this Pinot Noir from his cool-climate Elgin vineyards in South Africa. A clonal selection aged 11 months in French oak, it shows red cherry, earthy depth and a fine, fresh structure.
Description
Richard Kershaw is a British Master of Wine based in Elgin, one of the coolest wine regions in South Africa, and this Pinot Noir is built on a selection of clones chosen for the climate. Elgin lies at altitude near the south coast, where the ocean and elevation give a long, cool growing season. Pinot Noir is sensitive to its site, and these conditions let it ripen slowly while keeping the bright acidity, pale colour and aromatic lift that mark the grape. Kershaw works with parcel and clonal precision, fermenting separately and matching the components to the wine. It is aged 11 months in French oak, a measured amount that supports the structure and adds gentle spice through slow oxygen exchange without covering the delicate fruit. The colour is a translucent ruby. The nose shows red cherry and raspberry with floral and earthy notes and a touch of thyme. The palate is light to medium bodied and elegant, with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a long savoury finish that reflects the cool origin. This is Pinot in a restrained, classic register. Serve at 15 degrees in a wide glass, with duck, game birds or mushroom dishes.
