Rhum J.M Single Barrel by Kirsch Import 1999

Rhum J.M, distilling since 1845 in the far-north Mont Pelee terroir of Martinique and now part of GBH, is among the island's prized agricole names. This single barrel, selected by German importer Kirsch Import from a 1999 vintage, is a long-aged expression made from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice rather than molasses.

Distilled through a creole column and matured over two decades in ex-bourbon oak, it offers an expressive nose of vanilla, florals, oak and chocolate, then a palate of roasted notes, grass and barrel that turns slightly bitter and thin, finishing on black pepper and allspice. There is no added sugar under AOC rules. In keeping with the house style, it is bottled at a relatively gentle 43.6% rather than cask strength, which softens the body; the trade-off is a beautifully aromatic, complex agricole for anyone who prizes nose and nuance over raw power.
