A fifteen-year Martinique agricole from fresh cane juice, ex-bourbon aged and bottled unsweetened at an easy 41.8%, elegant and fruit-driven with tropical fruit, vanilla, cacao, leather and tobacco over soft oak.
Description
Rhum J.M, distilling since 1845 in the far-north Mont Pelee terroir of Martinique and now under GBH, is a prized agricole name, and this 2003 vintage is the house in mature, elegant form. It is distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice rather than molasses, and fifteen years in ex-bourbon oak under tropical conditions gives it depth well beyond its gentle strength.
The profile is fruit-led and refined: a nose of vanilla, cocoa and leather over the wood, a palate of tropical fruit, vanilla and tobacco with an elegant, polished feel, and a soft finish carrying tobacco and more tropical fruit. The oak is well integrated, drier and more spice-forward than a sweet molasses rum yet rounded by age. Bottled unsweetened at 41.8%, it is a slow, easy sipper for those who like aged agricole that prizes finesse over power.
