A ten-year Martinique vieux from Rhum J.M, distilled in 2002 from cane juice and aged in ex-bourbon oak at 46.3%, spicy vanilla and dried fruit over toasted barrel, with an earthy, herbal, firmly bitter finish that rewards a focused palate.
Description
Rhum J.M comes from the far north of Martinique, in the volcanic Mont Pelee terroir, and is among the island's most prized agricole houses. This 2002 vintage is a ten-year vieux, distilled on a column still from fresh sugar-cane juice, matured in ex-bourbon oak and bottled unsweetened at 46.3%.
The nose is generous and inviting, cinnamon, vanilla, dried fruit and caramel; the palate turns toward the barrel, vanilla, toasted and roasted oak driving the spirit; the finish brings fruit, herbal and earthy notes alongside a firm, slightly medicinal bitterness. That bitter twist is part of its character, sitting just within the lines and adding grip rather than spoiling balance. Tasters point to a real depth and an engaging nose, making this a focused, dry sipper for drinkers who enjoy classic aged agricole and do not mind a firm oak edge.
