A 1975 Rhum J.M from Martinique, a deeply aged cane-juice agricole carrying roasted, earthy and tobacco-laced wood with raisin and citrus, intense and savoury from long tropical maturation, bottled at a firm 50%.
Description
J.M has distilled in Martinique's far-north Mont Pelee terroir since 1845 and ranks among the island's most prized agricole houses. This 1975 vintage is a deeply aged release from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice, distilled on a column still and bottled unsweetened at 50%, a survivor from a long-gone era of the distillery whose maturity reads almost like a tropically-aged Demerara rather than a young agricole.
Decades in oak have pushed the spirit into a dark, savoury register far from its grassy origins. The nose is spicy, roasted, earthy and woody, the palate intense and roasted with tobacco and oak, and the finish carries raisin, citrus and lingering spice. The alcohol is remarkably well integrated for its strength, giving a smooth yet powerful pour. This is a contemplative sipper of real age and gravity, dry and spice-forward, best approached slowly and undiluted.
