Reyneke farms biodynamically in Stellenbosch. This Sauvignon Blanc spends nine months on its lees in barrel, which rounds the wine while keeping its core of lime, gooseberry and green guava taut and mineral.
Description
Johan Reyneke converted his Stellenbosch farm to organics in 1998 and later to full biodynamics, and that low intervention approach carries into the cellar. This Sauvignon Blanc is grown in the Coastal Region of South Africa, where cooling Atlantic influence and granite derived soils give the grape the acidity and mineral drive it needs to avoid heaviness. What sets it apart from a simple tank Sauvignon is the ageing: nine months on its lees in barrel. Lees contact and slow oxygen exchange through the wood build texture and a subtle savoury depth, while the barrels are used rather than new, so oak flavour stays in the background and the varietal character leads. The colour is pale gold. The nose is vivid with lime, gooseberry and green guava, with a herbal, flinty undertone. The palate is dry and mid weight, the fruit given a creamy edge by the lees while acidity keeps the finish long and clean. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits shellfish, grilled white fish, roast chicken and fresh goat cheese, the texture allowing richer preparations than lighter Sauvignon manages.
