Description
Rey Campero is the single maestro line of Rómulo Sánchez Parada in Candelaria Yegolé in the southern highlands of Oaxaca. This joven is made from wild Mexicano, Agave rhodacantha, known locally in Zapotec as Dobadaan, harvested from high fields where it grows among pine and broadleaf trees and said to exist in seven or more sub forms.
Made in the artesanal way, the Mexicano is pit roasted for its roasted, lightly smoky base, then distilled, with each batch refined by the maestro. The nose is fresh and lively with pine and spiced herbs, while the palate turns earthy and balanced, with charred oak bark, grilled cactus paddle and roasted poblano pepper. A faint leatheriness in the texture adds another dimension to a grounded, savoury mezcal.
