Description
Rey Campero Espadin is a joven mezcal from Rómulo Sánchez Parada, whose family palenque sits in Candelaria Yegolé in the Sola de Vega highlands of Oaxaca. The name means king of the countryside, and Sánchez Parada learned the trade from his father before returning to Oaxaca in 2003 to build the brand around his own nursery of agave.
The Espadín is roasted, then fermented in the open air with wild yeast, a process that widens the band of fruit and savoury notes the spirit can carry. Many batches also rest in glass before bottling, which softens the texture without adding wood. The nose offers sweet cooked agave, smoke and green vegetal notes, while the palate brings citrus, pepper, vanilla and an earthy mineral edge. At 47.1% it is robust and undiluted, equally at home sipped neat or anchoring a strong cocktail.
