Description
A joven mezcal from the wild Coyote agave, made by Maestro Mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada at his palenque in Candelaria Yegole, a small town in the southern highlands of Oaxaca. Rey Campero, meaning king of the countryside, was founded by Sanchez Parada and works from the family's own nursery of agaves. This is a special release rather than a permanent bottling, drawn from April 2021 with a total of 409 bottles filled. The label reads Agave Sp because the variety was unclassified at the time.
Production follows the artesanal route, double distilled in copper. The nose leans sweet and aromatic, with cotton candy, banana cream and sorbet. The palate brings tropical fruit, kiwi and pineapple, before an earthy clay note and passionfruit spread across the mouth. Texture swings between smooth and spicy, bottled undiluted at 49.8% to keep the wild agave forward.
