Rest & Be Thankful Clarendon MDR 2012

Clarendon is a Jamaican workhorse supplier running both pot and column stills, and its lighter MDR-coded stock, bottled here by the Scottish independent Rest & Be Thankful, sits at the soft, approachable end of the island's range. This 2012 release, sometimes read as Clarendon or Monymusk, makes an easy on-ramp into Jamaican funk rather than a flavour bomb.

Matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 46%, it is certified unsweetened, so its lightness is honest rather than sugar-smoothed. The nose brings pear, tropical fruit, vinegar and wood, the palate adds ester, glue and tropical fruit, and the finish turns peppery and nutmeg-spiced with a fruit-schnapps edge. The modest strength and restrained esters keep it relaxed and a touch herbal, equally at home sipped neat or in a mixer. A soft, accessible introduction to Jamaica for the curious, with the funk present but politely dialled down.
