Description
Resalte de Peñafiel works eighty hectares across Ribera del Duero, and this Essences Cuvée is a concentrated red made from Tinto Fino, the local Tempranillo. The vineyards lie on the high plateau around Peñafiel, where calcareous and gravelly soils drain well and the wide swing between hot days and cold nights slows ripening. That diurnal range fixes colour and tannin in the skins and holds the acidity that keeps a wine of this weight balanced. The fruit is given extended ageing in oak barrels, a long period during which slow oxygen exchange through the wood polishes the tannins, builds tertiary aromas of spice, tobacco and chocolate, and integrates the wood with the dark fruit. The colour is deep, dense red. The nose is layered, with dark plum and cherry alongside dried herbs, cocoa and sweet baking spice. The palate is full and concentrated yet silky, with ripe, well integrated tannins and a long, savoury finish carrying the oak spice. Serve at 17 degrees and decant an hour ahead to let the wine open. It is built for roast and grilled red meats, game and mature hard cheeses.
