Rennersistas makes this juicy Zweigelt in Gols, Burgenland, farmed biodynamically and made as a natural wine. Fresh and unfiltered, it shows blackberry, cherry and a wild, mineral edge over soft tannins at 12.5 percent.
Description
Rennersistas is the natural-wine project of Stefanie and Georg Renner in Gols, on the eastern shore of the Neusiedlersee in Burgenland, Austria. This wine is pure Zweigelt, the country's most planted red grape, a cross of Blaufränkisch and St Laurent known for deep colour, juicy dark fruit and soft tannin. The vines are farmed biodynamically, and the warm Pannonian plain is tempered by cool breezes off the broad, shallow lake, which lengthens ripening and preserves acidity. The wine is made naturally, with little or no added sulphur and no fining or filtration, which keeps the fruit vivid and gives a faint savoury grip. Ageing in older barrels rounds the texture without adding oak character. The colour is a deep, bright ruby with a slightly cloudy cast from being unfiltered. The nose shows blackberry and cherry with a wild, almost mineral edge and a touch of dried herb. The palate is juicy and energetic, with gentle tannins and fresh acidity driving a clean finish. Serve lightly chilled at around 14 to 16 degrees Celsius. It pairs with roast pork, duck and tomato-based dishes.
