Rennersistas make this deeply coloured natural rosé in Burgenland, Austria, from Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt farmed biodynamically. The 2021 is barrel aged and structured, with wild berry, crisp apple and a savoury, peppery edge.
Description
Renner and Rennersistas produce this rosé in Burgenland, in eastern Austria, where the fourth generation of the family farms biodynamically and makes natural wine. The blend of Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt is grown on the varied soils of the Neusiedlersee area, where the influence of the large lake moderates the climate and warm days give ripe red fruit. Both grapes are deeply pigmented, so the wine has a deeper colour than most rosé, and it is given some barrel ageing. The slow oxygen exchange through the wood, together with native-yeast fermentation and minimal cellar intervention, builds texture and a savoury, structured character that sets it apart from a simple pink wine. The nose shows wild berry, cherry and crisp apple, with a peppery, herbal edge typical of Blaufränkisch. On the palate it is dry, fresh and surprisingly structured for a rosé, with red fruit, a citrus lift and a savoury, mineral finish at 12.5% alcohol. As a natural wine it is best served cool but not ice cold. This is a rosé for the table rather than the sun lounger. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. It suits roast poultry, pork and richer fish dishes.
