Rennersistas makes this light Burgenland red from Blaufränkisch, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt, farmed biodynamically and made naturally. Barrel ageing rounds a fresh, low-tannin wine of red currant, cherry and a peppery, savoury edge at 12 percent.
Description
Rennersistas is the younger arm of the Renner family estate in Gols, Burgenland, run by Stefanie and Georg in eastern Austria near the shallow Neusiedlersee lake. Waiting for Tom blends Blaufränkisch, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt, the region's mainstay red grapes, into a light, drinkable natural wine. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, which avoids synthetic inputs and works to the rhythms of the season, and the warm Pannonian climate is moderated by cool air off the lake, helping the grapes keep acidity. The wine is made with minimal intervention and aged in older barrels that add no obvious oak flavour, only gentle oxygen exchange to soften the structure. Blaufränkisch brings pepper and dark berry, Pinot Noir lifts the perfume, and Zweigelt adds juicy cherry. The colour is a bright, light ruby. The nose shows red currant, cherry and wild red berries over black pepper and a savoury, earthy note. The palate is nimble and fresh, with low tannin and crisp acidity. Serve lightly chilled at around 13 to 15 degrees Celsius. It suits roast duck, chicken and charcuterie.
