A 3 year old Grenadian cane rum from Renegade aged in virgin American oak, fresh and mineral at 55% with sugarcane, light tropical fruit, caramel and young oak spice over a round, balanced sweet and dry frame.
Description
Foundations 2021 is a single cask from the Renegade distillery on Grenada, a young cane rum aged just three years in virgin American oak and bottled at cask strength of 55%. Renegade has made a name exploring Grenada as an emerging terroir, with a fresh, expressive house style and a focus on new oak maturation.
The virgin oak is central here, lending young spice and a rounding influence to a fresh, slightly vegetal cane spirit. The nose brings sugarcane, a light woody character and a mineral lift, the palate turns round and sweet with sugarcane and young wood, and the finish stays fresh and rounded. There is light tropical fruit, caramel and a saline minerality that marks it as a cane forward rum rather than a heavy molasses one, with the alcohol nicely integrated for the strength. Balanced between sweet and dry, it drinks well neat or with a splash of water, an engaging young expression of a rising rum island.
