Renegade’s Dunfermline pot still from Grenada is a young, high-proof cane spirit at 55%, unsweetened and barely aged, all green apple, perfume and iodine with a fruity, soft-wood finish that sits between eau de vie and rum.
Description
Renegade Rum distills on Grenada with a terroir-driven, single-field approach, and the Dunfermline release captures that project in its youth: a pot still spirit just eighteen months old, bottled unsweetened at 55% from ex-bourbon casks. It is one of the distillery's Etudes, study bottles meant to chart a new operation finding its voice.
At this age the cane speaks loudly. The nose is perfumed and floral with green apple, rubber and a saline edge, the palate turns acidic and mineral with iodine and baked apple, and the finish stays fruity, soft and lightly woody. The pot still gives weight and a touch of funk, while the youth keeps it raw and bright, closer to a fruit eau de vie or new-make whisky than a classic aged rum. It rewards slow, curious sipping, ideally alongside other Etudes releases, and will feel rough to anyone wanting polished sweetness.
