André Kientz makes this Alsace Gewürztraminer at his family estate, hand harvested and aged five months in oak. Organic and richly aromatic, it shows rose, lychee-like white peach and a warm spice of ginger and honey.
Description
Le Metzig is a Gewürztraminer from René Kientz Fils, the Alsace estate run by André Kientz since 1985 and farmed organically. Gewürztraminer is one of Alsace's noble grapes and the most aromatic of them, a pink skinned white known for its intense perfume. Alsace sits in the rain shadow of the Vosges mountains, one of the driest and sunniest wine regions in France, which lets this late ripening variety build ripe fruit and its signature floral, spiced aromatics while the region's varied soils add structure. The harvest is picked by hand, and the wine is aged for five months in oak barrels, a short, restrained élevage that rounds the texture and adds a little depth without covering the fruit. The colour is bright gold. The nose is powerful and unmistakably Gewürztraminer, with rose and white flowers, ripe white peach and apricot, and a warm spice of ginger, honey and nutmeg. The palate is full and softly textured, with ripe fruit, gentle spice and a long, faintly honeyed finish balanced by a dry, savoury edge. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. Its perfume and body suit spice and rich dishes.
