Remírez de Ganuza makes this barrel fermented white in Rioja Alavesa from Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía. Fermented and aged eight months on the lees in oak, it is rich and textured, with white peach, honey and toasted nuts.
Description
Remírez de Ganuza works out of Samaniego in Rioja Alavesa, an estate founded in 1989 by oenologist Fernando Remírez and known for meticulous grape selection and minimal intervention. This white Reserva blends Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía, drawing on the estate's older parcels where the poor, calcareous clay soils of the Alavesa and its altitude give slow ripening and firm acidity, the foundation for an age worthy white. The wine is fermented in barrel and then aged eight months on its lees in oak. Fermenting in wood and keeping the wine on its lees builds body and a creamy texture through the release of mannoproteins, while measured contact with oak adds spice and a slow, controlled exchange of oxygen that lends complexity. The colour is bright gold. The nose combines white peach and honey with toasted bread, hazelnut and a light vanilla note from the barrel. The palate is broad and textured, the fruit and oak carried by a fresh acidic spine to a long, nutty finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a large glass. It suits roast chicken, richer fish and hard cheeses.
