Olivier Rivière makes Rayos Uva in Rioja Baja from equal parts Graciano and Tempranillo grown around Aldeanueva de Ebro. Aged briefly in steel and large foudres, it is a fresh, low-oak red of red berries, pepper and herbs.
Description
Rayos Uva is a fresh, early-drinking Rioja from Olivier Rivière, a producer working with sustainable farming. It is an equal blend of Graciano and Tempranillo from vineyards in Aldeanueva de Ebro in the warmer, lower-altitude Rioja Baja. The wine follows a traditional vinification and then ages for around 10 to 12 months split between stainless steel tanks and foudres, very large old oak vessels. Steel keeps the fruit bright and primary, while the foudres allow a slow, gentle micro-oxygenation that softens the wine and rounds the tannins without adding the vanilla and toast of small new barrels. The high proportion of Graciano brings firm acidity, dark berry fruit and a peppery, herbal lift that keeps the wine light on its feet. It is bright cherry red. The nose shows red berries, cherry and red currant with black pepper and dried herbs over a faint earthiness. The palate is medium bodied and juicy, with fresh acidity, soft tannins and a clean finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, lightly chilled if you like, with charcuterie, roast pork or a mushroom dish.
