Raúl Pérez, the Bierzo winemaker behind this organic Mencía, draws on El Rapolao, a 1.5 hectare plot of old vines planted between 1920 and 1980 in Valtuille de Abajo. Light and fresh at 12 percent, it shows redcurrant, cherry and a floral, mineral lift.
Description
Raúl Pérez is among the most respected names in Bierzo, and Rapolao RP comes from El Rapolao, a small parcel of old Mencía vines in Valtuille de Abajo near Villafranca del Bierzo. The vines, planted between 1920 and 1980, are rooted in sandy, calcareous soils that drain freely and give wines of lightness and clarity rather than weight. Farmed organically, the fruit is picked early to keep alcohol low, and at 12 percent this is a wine made for freshness over power. Gentle handling in the cellar preserves the perfume and acidity of the grape, with only soft extraction so the tannins stay fine and the wine keeps its delicacy. It is pale to medium ruby in the glass. The nose is floral and bright, with redcurrant, cherry and a stony, slightly earthy edge, while the palate is light bodied and energetic, the acidity carrying the red fruit to a clean, mineral finish. There is a faint peppery note on the close. Serve lightly cool at 14 to 16 degrees Celsius, and it will pair well with roast duck, chicken and earthy mushroom dishes.
