From old Godello vines at Lomas de Valtuille in Bierzo, Raúl Pérez ferments La del Vivo and ages it twelve months in used French oak. The barrel adds texture rather than obvious wood, framing lemon, white peach and pear with beeswax and a mineral core.
Description
La del Vivo is a single variety Godello from D.O. Bierzo, made by Raúl Pérez under his La Vizcaína de Vinos label. The fruit comes from old vines in the municipality of Lomas de Valtuille. Bierzo sits between Galicia and the Castilian plateau, and its climate reflects that: mild with steady humidity like Galicia, but drier and more continental. The result is slow, even ripening that keeps acidity firm while the fruit fills out. After fermentation the wine ages twelve months in used French oak barrels. Because the oak is old rather than new, it contributes very little wood flavour and instead allows slow oxygen exchange, which builds texture and a fuller, rounder palate while the lees add further weight. The wine is bright gold. The nose leads with lemon and citrus peel, moving into white peach, pear and a light beeswax note from the barrel ageing. The palate is broad and textured, with a saline, mineral core keeping it fresh and focused through a long finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a larger white glass to show the texture. It suits roast chicken, richer white fish and hard nutty cheeses.
