Ramon do Casar is a young Ribeiro white from Treixadura, Albarino and Godello, grown on granite soils above the river Mino at 350 metres. It is light and aromatic, with green apple, ripe peach and a citrus lift.
Description
Ramon do Casar comes from Bodega Ramon do Casar in Prado, Ourense, within the D.O. Ribeiro in inland Galicia. The winery was built by the three Gonzalez Sabucedo brothers on land bought back by their father Ramon after twenty years in Venezuela. Their eight hectares sit on the banks of the river Mino at around 350 metres, planted in 2000 with the local varieties that lead this blend: Treixadura for structure and citrus, Albarino for aroma and acidity, and Godello for weight. The granite soils drain freely and hold little heat, which preserves the natural acidity that defines Ribeiro whites, while the Atlantic influence keeps the growing season cool. This is a young wine made for early drinking, fermented and handled to protect its primary fruit rather than build texture through oak. The colour is pale with green tints. The nose is fresh and subtle, showing green apple and ripe peach over white flowers and citrus peel. The palate is light and clean, with a saline mineral thread from the granite and a crisp finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It is a natural partner for shellfish and lighter fish dishes.
