Ramón Bilbao makes this Rioja rosé from old-vine Garnacha in the Tudelilla vineyard. The wine is pale pink and fresh, showing strawberry, raspberry and a fine floral edge, with a crisp, dry palate built for early drinking.
Description
Ramón Bilbao is based in Haro, in the heart of Rioja Alta, a town with one of the highest concentrations of wineries in the world. This rosé is a varietal Grenache drawn from old vines in the Tudelilla vineyard, in the eastern, warmer Rioja Oriental. Old vines give low yields of concentrated, balanced fruit, and the cooler nights of the higher sites keep the acidity firm. The grapes are pressed gently and the juice fermented at low temperature in stainless steel, which locks in the delicate aromatics and gives the wine its pale colour and clean line. There is no oak, so the fruit stays bright and direct. The colour is a pale, attractive pink. The nose is fresh, with strawberry and raspberry to the fore and subtle floral notes behind. The palate is dry and crisp, the red fruit framed by a citrus-edged acidity that keeps it lively from start to finish. The finish is clean and refreshing. Serve chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It makes a good aperitif and suits roast chicken, white fish and lighter summer dishes.
