Description
Ramilo is a long-established family estate in Colares, on the Atlantic edge of Portugal near Mafra, now farmed biodynamically. The vineyards sit on the windswept coast where sandy soils and cool ocean influence define the wines, holding back ripeness and keeping acidity high. The rosé is made from Castelão, a native Portuguese grape that gives bright red fruit and firm freshness in this maritime setting. After pressing, the wine rests nine months in stainless steel, which builds a little texture and roundness on the lees while preserving the primary fruit and avoiding any oak character. In the glass it is pale pink, with strawberry and cherry fruit, a twist of citrus peel and a clear saline, sea-air note that comes from the coastal site. The palate is dry and taut, the red fruit driven by sharp Atlantic acidity to a clean, savoury, slightly salty finish. This is a coastal rosé built around freshness rather than power. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
