Description
This official Isle of Raasay single malt from the Na Sia Single Cask Series, aged 4 year old, distilled in 2018, from cask 18/665 and bottled at 61.4%. Just 296 bottles were filled. Raasay is the first legal distillery on the Isle of Raasay, a small island in the Inner Hebrides off Skye. The Na Sia series, Gaelic for the six, bottles each of the six recipe casks as a single cask.
The spirit was run through the distillery's Italian built pot stills on mineral rich island water, after slow fermentation with a two stage distillers and Champagne yeast. Maturation in a Bordeaux cask brought dark berry fruit and a soft tannin. At this young age the fruit is vivid and the cask influence bold and bright. Island maturation in a small, careful operation keeps the spirit close to its source. First fill and virgin casks let this young spirit gain depth quickly. The distillery opened in 2017 and poured its first single malt in 2020.
At cask strength 61.4% it is muscular. The wine cask adds blackberry, plum and a red berry lift with a clean coastal lift behind. A bramble fruit and a warm spice run through. It finishes clean, fresh and fruity. This is the new wave of Hebridean whisky in a glass.
