Description
An Isle of Raasay distillery bottling from the Na Sia Single Cask Series distilled in 2018, from cask 18/624 and bottled at 62%. The Isle of Raasay Distillery opened in 2017, the first legal still on an island with a long history of illicit distilling. The Italian built stills nod to the distillery's continental leanings in cask choice.
It was drawn off a lantern wash still and a straight necked spirit still, following a long ferment that lends the new make a blackberry lift. An ex-Bourbon cask held it, soft oak giving vanilla and honey. With no age statement, it shows the bright, fruit driven style of a young island malt. Virgin oak and first fill casks layer vanilla and spice over the bright distillate. Raasay is a small island in the Inner Hebrides, just east of Skye. The six cask recipe of rye, Chinquapin oak and Bordeaux wine is unique in Scotch. Peated and unpeated spirit are matured apart, then married for the flagship malt.
At a full 62% it is deep and lively. The cask lends vanilla, baking spice and a honeyed sweetness. It is lively and deep, the cask and fruit well matched. The finish is deep, spiced and rounded. This is a characterful young malt made wholly on its island.
