Description
An Isle of Raasay distillery bottling, a Cask Strength bottling and bottled at 61.6%. A release of 5500 bottles. Raasay is a young Hebridean distillery, the first ever to legally distil on the Isle of Raasay. The flagship marries peated and unpeated spirit from rye, Chinquapin oak and Bordeaux casks.
Distilled in Italian built copper stills, a lantern wash still and a swan neck spirit still, the make carried a blackberry fruit from its long fermentation. Maturation came in American oak, with a generous vanilla and spice. Without an age statement, it is fresh, vibrant and cask forward. The young spirit takes colour and flavour readily from the active casks. Raasay is a small island in the Inner Hebrides, just east of Skye. The six cask recipe of rye, Chinquapin oak and Bordeaux wine is unique in Scotch. Peated and unpeated spirit are matured apart, then married for the flagship malt.
At 61.6%, undiluted, it is rich and vivid. The cask lends vanilla, baking spice and a honeyed sweetness. A dark berry fruit and a baking spice give it real lift. A long, sweet finish carries a gentle smoke. This is a bold young malt from Scotland's newest island distillery.
