RA Rum MRJB 1977

This 45 Year Old single cask carries the MRJB marque and a 1977 vintage, bottled by Rum Artesanal, the German house that works in the unsweetened full-proof tradition. Distilled from molasses on a combination of pot and column stills and matured in ex-bourbon, it has spent decades in cask, and the long ageing has traded raw Jamaican funk for refinement and oak-driven subtlety.

The nose leads with vanilla, wood, banana and spice, the palate is gentle and mellow with vanilla, roasted notes and caramel, and the finish runs woody with a touch of bitterness, tropical fruit and licorice. Bottled at 48.9%, it drinks light and elegant rather than powerful, with surprisingly little wood for its age. This is a slow-sipping rum for drinkers who value finesse and maturity over ester intensity, a quiet, contemplative side of old Jamaica.
