A continental Port Mourant from the double wooden pot still, bottled unsweetened by Rum Artesanal at 16 years and 56.5%, dry and woody with pencil shavings, anise, young oak and yellow fruit over a tannic, spicy finish.
Description
Rum Artesanal, a German house in the unsweetened full proof tradition, drew this 16 Year Old as a single port cask, a 2008 Port Mourant marque from Guyana. PM comes off the double wooden greenheart pot still, the heaviest and most polarising of the Demerara recipes, and this bottling shows its drier, woodier face at a natural 56.5%.
Pencil shavings and young sawn wood lead the nose alongside anise and herbs, and the palate stays lean and woody, anise and fresh-cut timber over spice and a faint melassic sweetness, with yellow fruit lifting the edges. The finish is dry and tannic with more pencil shaving and pepper. The port cask leaves a light touch rather than dominating, keeping this firmly in classic continental PM territory, a little leaner and more austere than the top tier releases but recognisably true to the marque. It is a characterful, fairly priced bottle for drinkers who already know and like the dry side of Port Mourant.
