Description
This single cask Cuban comes from Rum Artesanal, the German bottler working in the unsweetened full-proof tradition, drawn from a 2015 distillate carrying seven years and given a CADC cask finish. A column still molasses rum bottled at cask strength 59.6%, it leans firmly toward the raw and powerful.
The high proof dominates, with light vanilla, milk chocolate, caramel and wood struggling to assert themselves beneath the alcohol, and a thin, bitter, spirit-led finish. It reads sharp and uncompromising as a neat pour, with little of the roundness the style usually offers. Where it earns its place is in a glass meant to be built up, lending grip and heat to a Cuba Libre or similar long drink. Expectations should be set accordingly for sipping; this is a mixer's tool rather than a contemplative dram.
