Description
QX Quatre Xarel·los is a barrel-aged white from Ramon Jané Viticultor in D.O. Penedès, Catalonia. It is built from Xarel·lo, the region's flagship white grape, drawn from four old vineyards at Les Gunyoles, Font-Rubí, el Pla del Penedès and Subirats, farmed with respect for the land. Penedès sits inland from the Mediterranean, with calcareous soils and a warm climate tempered by altitude and sea breezes, which helps Xarel·lo keep its firm acidity and its capacity to age. The must ferments and matures for eight months in four different woods, each chosen for effect: chestnut to preserve fruit concentration, acacia for citrus lift, French oak for spice and American oak for ripeness. Slow oxygen exchange through the barrel and time on the lees build texture and a savoury complexity while keeping oak flavour in check. The wine is deep straw in colour, with white peach, pear and citrus peel on the nose, backed by almond, honey and a light wood spice. The palate is dry and full, with a nutty, waxy depth and a long, mineral finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. It suits roast poultry, pork and richer fish dishes.
