Quinta do Monte Xisto is a Douro Superior red from the Nicolau de Almeida family, blending Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Sousão on schist soils. Aged 18 months in French oak, it is a deep, concentrated red of dark plum, red berries and a stony edge.
Description
Quinta do Monte Xisto sits at Vila Nova de Foz Coa in Douro Superior, the hot, dry inland reaches of the Douro, where the Nicolau de Almeida family farm with respect for the local biodiversity. The estate name refers to the schist that defines the Douro: this fractured rock forces vine roots deep in search of water and gives the wines their mineral backbone. The family pioneered vertical planting here, which spreads the canopy across different levels of sun exposure and helps the grapes ripen evenly in a punishing climate. The blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Sousão is native to the region and built for structure and aromatic depth. Ageing runs 18 months in French oak, where slow oxygen exchange settles the tannin and adds spice to the dark fruit. The colour is deep, radiant red. The nose shows dark plum, red berries and floral hints over a stony, earthy edge. The palate is concentrated and structured, with firm tannin, dark fruit and a savoury, mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 18C, decanting an hour ahead. It suits grilled beef, roast lamb and game.
