Quinta do Crasto draws this Superior from its Quinta da Cabreira plots in the Upper Douro, blending Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Sousão. Schist soils and barrel ageing give ripe plum, blackberry and a structured, mineral depth.
Description
Quinta do Crasto is one of the Douro Valley's established estates, and Superior is sourced from its Quinta da Cabreira plots in the Upper Douro, the hot, dry eastern reach of the region. The blend draws on the classic Douro grapes Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Sousão, each chosen for structure, aromatics, colour and acidity. The vineyards sit on the schist soils that define the Douro, fractured rock that forces the vines to root deep for water and lends the wine its mineral grip and concentration. The continental climate brings intense summer heat tempered by altitude and cool nights, ripening the fruit fully while preserving freshness. After hand harvesting into small crates, the grapes are sorted, destemmed and pressed, and the wine is aged in oak that rounds the tannin and adds a measured spice frame. Expect a deep ruby colour, a nose of ripe plum, blackberry and black cherry with a peppery, mineral edge, and a full bodied palate that is concentrated and structured with firm tannin and a long, savoury finish marked by liquorice and dark chocolate. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant ahead. It suits roast and grilled red meat.
