Description
Quinta Apolonia is made by Belondrade y Lurtón, the estate Didier Belondrade built in La Seca, in the heart of Rueda, farming the varietal Verdejo organically. Rueda sits on the high Castilian plateau, where poor, stony soils, hot days and cold nights, and altitude of around 700 metres give Verdejo its combination of ripe fruit and firm acidity. The wide day-to-night temperature swing is what preserves aromatics and freshness through ripening. This is the estate's fresher expression, aged three months on its lees, a short period of yeast contact that adds a little roundness and texture while keeping the wine bright and primary. It is bottled young to show the grape's aromatics. The colour is pale lemon with green tints. The nose is aromatic, with lemon and citrus over green apple and pear, white flowers and the herbal, faintly gentian note that marks the variety. The palate is dry and crisp, with fresh acidity, orchard fruit and a gently bitter, mineral finish that is typical of Verdejo. Serve well chilled at around 8 to 10 degrees. It works as an aperitif and with fresh fish and salads.
