Description
Quiñón de Valmira is a single vineyard Garnacha from D.O.Ca. Rioja, made by Palacios Remondo in Alfaro at the eastern end of the appellation. The fruit comes from one calcareous shelf above the Ebro valley with cold soils, a surface layer just 20 centimetres deep over carbonate and clay iron sediment, with the real character coming from the subsoil the roots reach into. Those poor, chalky soils and cool sites give an open, expressive wine rather than a heavy one, the limestone lending freshness and lift to the ripe Garnacha fruit. The grapes are fermented on their skins for colour and structure, then the wine is aged twenty months in French oak, where slow oxygen contact softens the tannins and frames the fruit with subtle spice. This magnum holds a ruby red colour, the nose generous with ripe red berries, cherry and plum over black pepper and dried herbs, the palate ripe and intense yet balanced, with fine tannins, a liquorice edge and a long finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It suits roast meats, game and mushroom dishes.
