Description
Querencia Deseya comes from Bodegas San Alejandro, a growers cooperative that has become a benchmark for Garnacha in D.O. Calatayud, in the mountainous interior of Aragon in north east Spain. The appellation sits at altitude on poor slate and stony soils, where old Garnacha vines struggle for vigour and yield small, concentrated crops. The high elevation brings cold nights that contrast with hot days, a diurnal swing that preserves freshness and the variety's bright red fruit while the warm afternoons ripen the tannins fully. The fruit is farmed organically. This is an unoaked style, raised without time in barrel so the focus stays on pure fruit and the herbal lift of the high country. It pours a lush, deep red, with raspberry and red currant, plum, and the fennel and wild herb notes that mark Calatayud Garnacha, over a velvety palate with integrated tannins and a peppery, liquorice tinged finish. Serve at 16 degrees. It is an everyday red that suits grilled meat and stews.
