The Bargagli family makes this Morellino di Scansano from Sangiovese grown on old vines in south-western Tuscany. Aged in wood, it shows ripe cherry, plum, dried herbs and leather, with the bright acidity and savoury grip that mark the grape.
Description
Provveditore is a family estate run by the Bargagli family near Scansano, in the Maremma of south-western Tuscany, farming 30 hectares of old and new vines alongside olive groves. This Morellino di Scansano is made from Sangiovese, the grape known locally as Morellino, grown on the warm clay and stony soils of the coastal Maremma. The Mediterranean climate and proximity to the sea ripen Sangiovese more fully than in the cooler Chianti hills, giving rounder fruit, while the grape keeps its hallmark bright acidity and firm, savoury tannin. The wine ages in wood, where slow oxygen exchange integrates the tannins and adds a light spice and structure without masking the fruit. The colour is medium ruby, garnet at the rim. The nose shows ripe cherry and plum, with dried Mediterranean herbs, leather and tobacco. The palate is medium to full bodied, fresh and savoury, the tannins firm and grippy, the finish long with an earthy, herbal edge. This is a versatile Tuscan red built for the table. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits beef, lamb and tomato-rich pasta.
