Protos makes this organic Verdejo in Rueda, on the high Castilian plateau. Two months on its lees add texture to a crisp, aromatic white of lemon, green apple and the grape’s typical herbal, fennel-like edge.
Description
Protos, the historic Ribera del Duero house, makes this Verdejo in the neighbouring D.O. Rueda, on the high Castilian plateau of Castilla y Leon. Rueda's continental climate is severe, with hot days and cold nights over stony, free-draining soils at altitude, and that wide day-to-night swing is what lets Verdejo keep its sharp acidity and aromatic lift while ripening. The grapes are organically farmed. After fermentation the wine rests two months on its fine lees, a short ageing that adds a light creamy weight and rounds the texture without covering the fruit. The colour is pale straw with green tints. The nose is fresh and typical of the grape, with lemon and green apple over pear, white flowers and Verdejo's signature herbal, faintly fennel-like note. The palate is crisp and dry, the lees texture giving a little breadth before a clean, citrus-peel finish with a characteristic slightly bitter twist. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It works as an aperitif and with fresh fish, shellfish and goat cheese.
