Bodegas Príncipe de Viana makes this varietal Tempranillo in D.O. Navarra, where a Mediterranean climate meets a clear Atlantic influence. Three months in oak keeps it fresh and approachable, with red cherry, plum and a light savoury spice.
Description
Príncipe de Viana Tempranillo is made by Bodegas Príncipe de Viana in Murchante, in D.O. Navarra. The winery was founded in 1983 and takes its name from a title of Navarrese nobility dating to 1423, a nod to its sense of tradition. Navarra sits where a Mediterranean climate meets a clear Atlantic influence, so warm, dry summers ripen the fruit while cooler, damper conditions and the cold nights keep acidity and freshness, giving a lighter, more lifted style of Tempranillo than the hot central plateau. The wine spends just three months in oak, a short ageing that softens the edges and adds a light vanilla and spice without covering the fruit, so the result stays bright and easy to drink. The colour is a clear cherry red. The nose shows fresh red cherry, plum and red currant with a touch of vanilla and dried herb, and the palate is medium-bodied and supple, with soft tannin, juicy acidity and a clean, savoury finish. This is a wine for the table rather than the cellar. Serve at 16 degrees. It suits roast and grilled meats, poultry and lighter stews.
