Description
Príncipe de Viana Chardonnay is a single-variety white from the D.O. Navarra, made by the Chivite-owned house of the same name. The grapes are picked at night in September, which limits oxidation, preserves the fresh aromatics and brings the fruit into the cellar at cooler temperatures. Navarra sits at the meeting point of Atlantic, Mediterranean and continental influences, and the cool nights of the growing season retain acidity in the Chardonnay while the warm days ripen it to a riper, stone and orchard-fruit style. After fermentation the wine spends around three months in barrel, a short passage that softens the texture and adds a light spice and vanilla lift without masking the fruit. The colour is pale gold with green tints. The nose shows pear, apple and white peach, with a touch of melon and a discreet toasty, hazelnut note from the wood. The palate is medium bodied and rounded, the ripe fruit balanced by clean acidity and a gently creamy finish. Serve at 10 to 11 degrees in a white glass.
