Description
Precious Liquors bottled this single cask Caroni for East Asia Whisky as its Tortuga No. 2, drawn from the 1998 vintage, a 23 year release at cask strength with no additives. Caroni is the legendary Trinidad distillery that closed around 2003, and its finite 1998 casks remain among the most bottled and sought after.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak, this is an approachable reading of the heavy style: tar, rubber and leather sit alongside mango on the nose, then a palate of rubber, tobacco, burnt notes and leather wrapped in honeyed wood and dried fruit, finishing on tannins, spice and a bitter edge. The HTR Caroni markers are clearly present but embedded in a sweeter, rounder bouquet of tropical fruit, vanilla and nuts. At 59.9% it stays powerful while remaining very drinkable, a fine balance that makes it a rewarding full-proof Caroni for experienced palates.
